Personal Emergency Contact Number

Please have your emergency contact number(s) under ICE (In Case of Emergency) in your cell phone and on a label/card of some sort attached to your daypack. Details should consist of your name, ID number, name of medical aid and membership number (your medical aid card should be with you too) and the name and number(s) of someone to contact. Emergency personnel will look for your ICE details. Local hospitals will not send out an ambulance or paramedics if your medical aid details are not available. Please carry these important details with you on each hike.

Most often changes are announced on Facebook.

Saturday Hikes

Please get to the starting point by 13h45 in order for the hike to begin on time. Some hikes start at different times.
For directions to the starting point, please PHONE the organiser between 12h00 and 12h45 on the day of the hike, don’t SMS.
Children are welcome but check suitability of hike with leader.
Please bring at least 1 litre of water, a snack for half time and a hat.

Sunday Hikes  (Full Day)

Always phone the hike leader beforehand to let him/her know to expect you on the hike.
Please try to get to the meeting places at least 10 minutes earlier to help with arranging lifts.
Bring the correct amount of money as change may not be available.
It is advisable to bring at least 2 litres of water, mid-morning snack, lunch and a hat.
Meeting Place  : Union Main Centre, Old Main Road,  Pinetown to depart at 08h00.  If there is a change to the meeting time or venue this will be noted in the hiking schedule below. This is not used that often.
If it is raining, please check with the hike leader before setting out for the meeting place.
NB  :   if you need a lift from the meeting place,  contact the hike leader or one of the hike organisers to arrange

Sat 2 Jul 2022 Beachfront

Park at Snake Park (that is the big parking lot next to Minitown) and meet in front of Circus Circus on the promenade. Meet at 13:45 to start walking by 2pm. We will walk south towards the harbour, then head into the Point Area and look at the canals, then head back. Circus Circus closes early so please BYO and a chair and we can sit on the grass in front of the Snake Park and have sundowners afterwards.

Hike around Bluff NR (lesser known top section and bottom section with 2 bird hides over the pan), walk Bluff streets to Treasure Beach, explore rock pools towards Brighton Beach, climb along a bushy path up the rounded cliff that gives the Bluff its name and zigzag along streets back to the Bluff NR bottom section. ±R50 entrance fee. Meet at 08.00 at Bluff NR in Tara Rd (near Quality Str/ Highbury Rd intersection)

From N2, Exit 190 Verulam, left at T-junction away from coast, right at sign to Mt Moreland. Meet at Mt Moreland Village Green/Barn/ Swallow View site at 13:45. Hike on tracks through cane lands, towards King Shaka Airport and Mt Moreland Village. BYO to enjoy after the hike.

From Shongweni Club hike to Clifton Tower and down into Giba Gorge. Parking fee is R10 if not staying for drinks at the club afterwards. Meet at 08:00 at the Durban Shongweni Club (Cnr Cliffdale & Kassier Rd). Booking preferably by WhatsApp.

Sat 16 Jul 2022 Hill and Dale

Meet at 13:15 for a 13:30 start. Take Hammarsdale off ramp and turn left towards Hammarsdale on the M385. After approximately 1km take the first road on the right – D657. (it is also sign posted Animal Anti Cruelty League). We will meet a short way down on the D657. Hike through cane fields and grassland. Views far and wide. R20 donation to the conservancy.

Explore the Everton Conservancy in Acutts Drive following the Molweni River to Gillits Falls where we will stop for lunch. Return along a different route where possible. A hike around the upper reaches of the Sterkspruit Valley and over the dome. Meet at 8:45 at the Turnoff to Harrison Flats (a pin will be provided) to drive in a convoy to the parking area. Those that want to lift share, should meet at Maytime at 8:20.

Sat 30 Jul 2022 Monteseel Conservancy Circuit

From Old Main Road through Botha’s Hill, pass Drummond, turn right (SAPS sign) to Monteseel and immediately left into Hacienda Pub for parking by 13:45. R20 for conservancy. Hike on roads and paths along cliffs overlooking Valley of 1000 Hills. Refreshments at Hacienda afterwards in appreciation for parking.

Beach hike from Ballito to Salt Rock with rocky outcrops (some difficult sections), lovely rock pools teeming with marine life and soft corals, tidal pools for a quick dip (bring costumes). Stockville Rd. Gillits. Park and meet at Gillits Shopping Centre, York Rd, off Old Main Rd, (behind Caltex Garage), by 13:45. R20 for Crowned Eagle Conservancy. Walk through suburb to Conservancy in Stockville Rd. George and Mervyn will guide us through reclaimed wetland, look out points above the stream and waterfall, and their museum housing artefacts found on the property. Return uphill to cars and drinks at Hay Ways.

Sun 7 Aug 2022 Morewood Farm – New Hike

M13, Exit 33, left and 1st right into Cliffdale, left into Hawkstone, right into Summerhill Rd. Park at Summerveld Lodge by 13;30. A challenging hike, with some steep paths. Views towards Hammarsdale. Drinks at the Lodge afterwards.

Terrain is easy with mainly coastal forest and some sugarcane, hence fairly exposed. Shorter route may be available. If weather is good bring cozzies to swim after the hike and/ or have drinks at the pub. Entrance fee R20. Start hiking at 08:30am from Rocky Bay Resort. Petrol sharing will be organized on the group chat.

A hike that will take us to the top of iNanda Mountain which towers over iNanda Dam. The views all around are considered to be the absolute best in Durban. A great bird watching opportunity with birds of prey that hunt off the cliff faces and sometimes glide close by. Fee R50 (members) or R70 (nonmembers). For an early start, meet 07:15 Sasol Garage Avoca (N2 exit 177 for Curnick Ndlovu Hwy (KwaMashu Inanda)) to drive in convoy to Matata Adventures (in Maphephetheni area near Meyiwa Primary School) where cars will be safely parked. The Bluff, Brighton Beach. Park in the reserve, R20 entrance fee at the gate. Durbans’ oldest Nature Reserve consisting of large wetland and adjacent forest. Bring binoculars for possible bird spotting. BYO refreshments for afterwards, before closing time of 17:00.

Explore the Berea and Morningside suburbs, looking at Heritage Homes/ Buildings as identified by Prof. Brian Kearney in his book A Revised Listing of the Important Places and Buildings in Durban, 1984. Some surprises along the way, culminating in a visit to Elephant House, the oldest standing home in Durban, 1849! A R40 donation will be collected per person. Jonathan will lead a walk around Durban pointing out some of our architectural heritage, specifically the Art Deco Style. Visit the Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre (North Beach); Warriors Gate at the Old Fort & Port Natal Maritime Museum (Time Permitting). There will be a R40 donation per person. Bring some money for refreshments/coffee along the way. Drinks afterwards at Wilson’s Wharf. Park at Wilsons Wharf (Boatmans Road) to start walking at 8:00.

Park and meet across the road from Stella Sports Club – 175 Helen Joseph Rd. by 13:45. Street walking to Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve. Explore this indigenous gem in suburbia, bristling with birdlife. Return via Phansi Museum. A couple of steep hills. Drinks at Stella Sports Club afterwards. Car guard to be tipped please.

Hike to the top of the KZN/ PMB Table Mountain to enjoy some of the escarpment and magnificent views of the Valley of a 1000 Hills, the Midlands in the far distance, the Msunduzi and Umgeni Rivers as well as the Nagle Dam. Parking at the top is R50 per car. Guide fees is R50 per person. Meet at 08.15 at Cato Ridge Motors (close to Eddie Haven Drive, Cato Ridge). Petrol sharing R40. Park at Westville Country Club by 13:45. R20 for conservancy. Hike along well cut trails, through a tunnel, along lush river banks and some grassland. Drinks at Club (outside) afterwards.

We will follow our normal route into and out of the valley, hopefully not being restricted by development and possible flood damage. Expect anything especially quite a bit of water. Park on the verge outside The Pot and Kettle, 136 Old Main Rd, Bothas Hills at 8.15 a.m. Please book with the Hike Leader.

Sat 24 Sep 2022 Umdloti Coastal and Forest

Heritage Day Meet at 2nd beach parking at 13:30 to start hiking at 13:45. Drive down to the bottom round-a-bout (Bush Tavern, garage and little shopping cntre on your right), the sea is in front of you. Turn right along the beach road and park in the 2nd parking area.

Walk south from Zinkwazi Beach. This hasn’t been walked for a while so who knows what has changed. However the old red dune erosion pits should still be there. These are quite unusual. Drinks after at the club. Meet at 07.40 Sibaya Casino near the entrance or at 08.30 at the Zinkwazi Ski Boat Club (parking at the end of Seagull Drive). Petrol sharing R50.
